Supporting the Voluntary Sector in Gwent

Black and Ethnic Minority

Hi, we would like to introduce ourselves as the new BME Communities First Development Workers, Shazia Ahmed, and Shajan Miah, also known as Shaz. Our remit is the whole of Newport, and one of the ultimate goals of our job is to promote the BME community in Newport to play a bigger role in the mainstream community.
The BME communities in Newport face economic, social and cultural factors that can negatively affect daily living. Disparities in educational resources, disproportionate low wage employment, high unemployment rates, lack of support and communication are seen to be some of the barriers to the rights and entitlements within an inclusive society. As BME Development Workers we are fortunate to be in a position to support BME communities with these pressing issues and make a real difference. Our aim is to engage with the BME community in such a way that enables them to sustain themselves through any means, such as capacity building and social enterprise. Community Development is all about working with the community. We want you to work with us and together we can promote opportunities for people to use their own strengths and resources to empower people to build a better future.
