Community Development in Blaenau Gwent

GAVO is an Independent Voluntary Organisation which aims to:

Provide support to the Voluntary Sector through training, advice, information, publications and the recruitment of volunteers

Promote opportunities for the Voluntary Sector to work together in Forums

Encourage partnership between voluntary and statutory services

Respond to the needs of the community by identifying un-met needs and developing new services

Support Town and Community Councils

 

Help for Voluntary Organisations Via:

Provision of advice and information

Help with project development

Advice on constitutions and charitable status

Help with funding applications

Provision of practical resources such as typing and photocopying

Assisting joint partnership with statutory agencies

Feedback of views to policy makers

 

Meet the Team

Huw Lewis

Huw has worked in the Third Sector for the past 16 years in a wide range of organisations and disciplines.


In 1996 Huw began volunteering for the Community Mental Health Team in Blaenau Gwent after redundancy. Following this, Huw worked for various third sector organisations including Age Concern, Barnardos, NASH and RSVP and has also worked for both Newport and Caerphilly Borough Council in his capacity as a Child Care Support Worker.


Huw has been employed by GAVO in the Community Development Department for the past 10 years and has been involved in developing and supporting projects identified by voluntary and community groups throughout the whole of Blaenau Gwent.


Huw’s key responsibilities include:

Mandy Moore

Returning to Community Development after 5 years seconded into the Welsh Government on a strategic regeneration programme. Mandy has over twenty years broad based and progressive responsibility experience in Community Development, Management and Regeneration in the Private, Public and Voluntary sectors. Working in partnership to successfully complete projects which have included building refurbishments, sports venue upgrades, memorials and accessing funding for projects.

Andrea currently works as a Community Economic Development Officer on the Enterprising Communities project based in GAVO and covers the Blaenau Gwent area. Andrea has worked in the voluntary sector over the last 12 years as a Support worker, Communities First Development Officer and Project Manager and has volunteered with many community projects in the area.


Andrea has undertaken many projects working on community development, regeneration and Social Enterprise development and support. She has also taken part in the Engendering Change Empowering Women training looking at increasing confidence and skills for women in work and public life.


Andrea enjoys her current post developing and supporting local enterprise and hopes to increase the understanding and promotion of Social Enterprise in Blaenau Gwent.
