Training - Volunteering

Volunteering is at the heart of what we do.
The sessions in 'Volunteering' will give individuals and organisations who organise and manage volunteers an introduction to the various aspects of engaging with volunteers - recruitment, selection, support and guidance, risk assessment, volunteering policies and examples of best practice

Introduction to Volunteering

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • understand the nature and scope of volunteering and how it differs from paid work

  • recognise how and why organisations involve volunteers in their work

  • appreciate the resource implications of involving volunteers

Preparing for Volunteers

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • be able to identify volunteer roles and draw up volunteer 'task descriptions'

  • know how to assess and manage risk relating to volunteers

  • understand key legal issues relating to volunteers

  • be able to develop a volunteering policy

  • have considered what other policies might be necessary

  • have identified actions for improvement in their own practice and that of their organisation

Volunteer Recruitment, Selection and Induction

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • be familiar with a range of methods to attract a diversity of volunteers

  • recognise ways in which volunteering can be made more accessible to all

  • recognise 'selection' as a two way process and be familiar with a range of selection tools

  • be able to prepare questions for and conduct a selection interview.

  • understand the use of vetting procedures, including CRB checks and recognise their limitations

  • understand the purpose and nature of a) volunteer agreements b) volunteer induction

  • recognise potential uses and abuses of volunteers' personal information

  • have identified actions for improvement in their own practice and that of their organisation

Getting the Best From Your Volunteers

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • understand good practice in relation to motivation, support and supervision of volunteers

  • recognise the opportunities for volunteers' personal development and learning

  • know how to give appropriate recognition to volunteers

  • recognise key sources of conflict and ways of managing difficulties

  • understand when and how to terminate the volunteering relationship
