The Annual Report of the Director of Social Services is now in its 4th year in Newport and gives residents the chance to voice their opinions about the effectiveness of the care services provided to them.

This approach requires each Welsh council to thoroughly analyse and assess services provided and then to consider what they are doing well, what could be done better and to pull together evidence that supports the conclusion reached. These internally reached judgements are then subject to challenge by partners, carers and users of services.

Evidence Grids for 2012/13 have been drafted and are now available for consultation. This process is to check that the draft information gathered shows a clear approach to issues and a logical thread between:

1.     What Social Services is aiming to do;

2.     What Social Services is saying they are doing;

3.     The results being achieved; and

4.     The priorities Social Services are setting out for the future.

This ensures that the real impact of services on users and carers is taken into account and whether or not a difference has been made.

The 4 week consultation with staff and partners has now begun and closes on Thursday 30th May 2013. Further information and copies of the draft Evidence Grids are available via the following link:

When submitting feedback please think about whether the information gathered relates to the four points highlighted above and also clearly state which of the evidence grids this concerns.

Dear Colleague,

We are currently developing the Commission’s Framework for Action 2013-17, which will guide our work and be used to inform our operational work programmes over the next four years.

It is founded on the views of older people, as well as those that support and represent them, which have been gathered through extensive and ongoing engagement across Wales during the past year.

The four themes within our Framework for Action provide a clear focus for our work. They have been written in a way that reflects the outcomes that older people have told us matter to them. Each year we will publish an operational work programme, linking specific work to these themes. In this way the Commission can be confident that our work is actively improving the lives of older people in Wales.

We will publish our new Framework for Action in February 2013, which will support the development of our operational work during the following four years. I am therefore writing to you to seek your views, and the views of those you represent, on our proposed Framework for Action, as part of a wider programme of engagement with older people and stakeholders.

I would be grateful for your comments, thoughts and suggestions in relation to the following:

1.            Do the four themes identified in the framework represent areas that will lead to positive outcomes for older people?

2.            Are the actions that we are proposing to undertake under the four themes appropriate?

3.            Are the values that underpin our approach appropriate?

I really want to hear from you about what you want me to be focused on in the coming years and I welcome any comments you have. Please also feel free to forward this information to your networks and contacts so that they can have the opportunity to comment as well.

I have been very clear as Commissioner that I am determined to make a positive difference to the lives of older people. It is important to identify where I can best add value as there are many organisations in Wales working to improve the lives of older people. I want to avoid the potential for duplication and ensure that there is clarity in terms of what I will be focusing on.

To provide feedback, please use the draft Framework for Action and the feedback template, both of which are available for download from our website http://www.olderpeoplewales.com/en/news/news/12-10-25/Your_views_on_our_future_direction.aspx  The closing date for comments is Monday 3 December.

If you would like hard copies of the draft Framework for Action and the feedback template, or if you have any queries, please email Nicolette.Sutton@olderpeoplewales.com

Yours sincerely,

Sarah Rochira

Newport City Council - Engaging with Newport Residents

The Overview and Scrutiny Forum for Leisure and Continuing Learning is currently conducting a review of how the council engages with local people. The Forum is looking into different ways of communicating with local people, to see if public engagement in Newport could be more effective and efficient. The existing neighbourhood committees are on hold while the review is carried out. We would like to hear what Newport’s residents think about each option before making recommendations about the way forward. Please complete the online survey which can be found here. Welsh Government - Mental Health Regulations 2012

On 26 September 2011 the Welsh Government began a formal consultation on the draft Mental Health (Regional Provision) (Wales) Regulations 2012.

If made, this subordinate legislation would enable Local Health Boards and local authorities in Wales to enter into regional working arrangements to deliver local mental primary mental health support services under Part 1 of the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010, and in making arrangements for the provision of assessments for former users of secondary mental health services under Part 3 of the Measure.

The consultation period begins on 26 September 2011, and all responses must be submitted to the Welsh Government's Mental Health Legislation Team no later than16 December 2011. Click here to download the draft Regulations and consultation document

These can be accessed via the links below:

National Survey for Wales will help the Welsh Government to understand and tackle the issues that are important to people in Wales. The survey covers a range of issues, such as people’s wellbeing, their views about public services, and what they think about their local area. Interviews will be carried out face-to-face with a representative sample of people aged 16 and over across Wales. Fieldwork will start in January 2012 and continue for at least 3 years; results will be published annually from late summer 2012. The survey is being carried out by TNS-BMRB and Beaufort Research Ltd, specialist research companies working on our behalf. All interviewers working on the survey have been CRB checked and will carry identification badges displaying their photo, company name and contact details.

Consultation - Annual Report of the Director of Social Services 2011/12

The Annual Report of the Director of Social Services is now in its 3rd year in Newport and gives residents the chance to voice their opinions about the effectiveness of the care services provided to them.
